Shaving Rash & More

Get your questions answered about dealing with a shaving rash & more

I'm a bit embarrassed to write this, but here it goes: I'm a 23-year-old male and I shaved my private area two days ago. Now I have what looks like a rash. I put cream on it to stop the itch, but I think it made things worse.

Do you have any idea how to stop this? I'm so embarrassed I don't think I would be able to go to the doctor with it.

E.B.

E.B.,

First off, avoiding going to the doctor out of embarrassment is just wrong. Shaving the genital area is quite common among men and women, and you're far from the first to develop a rash doing so. Any established practitioner will have seen dozens of stranger and more mortifying conditions than your rash, so get over your self-consciousness -- it will only hurt you in the long run.

As for an explanation for your rash, well, just think back to the aftereffects of the first time you shaved your face -- the redness, razor bumps and itchiness. Now amplify those effects to account for the fact that the skin in your groin area is far more sensitive than that on your face, and you've got your likely answer. Likely, but not definite -- an allergy to the cream you used or something else entirely might be behind your current woes. So, if your condition persists, get to a doctor.

I was hoping you could answer a question for me: Why is it that men have shorter, less frequent orgasms than women?

Bryan

Hi Bryan,

Great question. It does seem that women get more bang for their buck in the bedroom, doesn't it? You might be surprised to learn, however, that the female orgasm doesn't typically span longer than its male equivalent.

The difference is that women enjoy a longer "plateau period" than we do. It is during this second phase of sexual response (occurring after arousal and before orgasm and resolution) that we reach the peak of our sexual pleasure. For men, it culminates in an orgasm, but for women, the plateau phase continues through orgasm, which is what allows them to achieve a second or third state of climax shortly after the first one.

These multiple orgasms can occur in such close proximity so as to appear as one prolonged one.

Can ejaculation during anal sex cause pregnancy?

Oudom

In a word, no. Ejaculation during anal sex deposits sperm into the gastrointestinal tract, which is in no way connected with a woman's reproductive system.

Some will point out that semen might leak out of the anal opening and find its way into the vagina, and lead to impregnation, but this is such an improbable possibility that, as a risk factor, it's negligible.

messy sheets

After intercourse (with a condom), I usually check to see if there was any leakage or rips before I dispose of the condom. When I come back to where I had intercourse (say, the bed) I sometimes notice fluids on the sheets. Sometimes, they're very watery, other times, they're thick and slimy -- like semen.

Where could these fluids have come from and what could they be? I check for leakage when the condom is still wrapped somewhat tightly around my penis (right before disposal), so I don't think my semen could have "escaped" from the condom. Could these semen-like fluids have come from my partner? I would very much appreciate your opinion.

Jas

Hi Jas,

Sex can be a pretty messy operation, Jas, and you're not the only one contributing liquids to the process. It's normal for the vagina to generate certain fluids; they act as cleansing and moistening agents. Sexual excitement will often result in an increase in the quantity of such fluids being produced.

There is no uniform description that applies to these discharges -- depending on where a woman is at in her menstrual cycle, they can be white, clear, thick, gooey or runny. The only time you should be concerned is if you notice a sudden and dramatic change in color (to green, brown or gray) or she complains of itching or burning. Both can be symptoms of infection.

withdrawal symptoms

I am a 22-year-old male and have been dating my girlfriend for around a year. We both initiate sex, but it seems that when I initiate it, she isn't really in the mood or makes excuses to avoid having sex. When she initiates it, we have it. I feel rejected when she's not in the mood or makes excuses, and get really down on myself. My girlfriend says that sex is a small thing in a relationship and I told her that it's a bigger thing to me than to her. What should I do?

Mark

Mark,

Well Mark, I don't mean to get you down, but welcome to manhood. You know those cliched jokes we hear about women cutting their significant others off as punishment? Or about men having to plead or beg just to get their wife or girlfriend into the bedroom? Sitcoms and comic strips have run their course without employing at least a few of them. Well, these gags are called cliches for a reason: They're widely accepted as truths. Depressing, right?

There are several factors that may be accounting for the discrepancy between your and your girlfriend's libidos. You are probably still in the later years of your sexual peak, whereas she is likely still a good decade or so away from reaching hers. You have a strong biological incentive propelling your desire: A man's seminal vesicles and the prostate are responsible for "blue balls" and the feelings of grumpiness that accompany prolonged abstinence from sexual release. Furthermore, women tend to view sex as more emotionally significant than men do, and are thus more selective about indulging in it.

These are all potential explanations, but not excuses. If you feel that this situation is acting as an impediment to the progression of your relationship, there's no reason to dismiss it as selfishness on your part. Providing that there are no additional circumstances (such as a medical condition on her end or unreasonable demands on yours), it might be time for a serious discussion with your girlfriend.

below par

I know people keep saying that the average penis size is five to six inches, or whatever. But I feel that my penis hasn't grown since I was like 12 or 13. It's still very small, measuring a bit shy of five inches in length and about four in girth.

I have a friend who isn't shy about showing off his penis, and once when we went camping he just stripped nude. I noticed that his penis was much bigger when limp. Is there anything for enlargement?

Stan

Stan,

It's all relative, Stan. Had you shed your clothes on that camping trip, I might be reading a letter from another friend of yours right now, complaining about his own size after witnessing yours. Another thing to keep in mind is that the size of a limp penis isn't indicative of its dimensions when erect. Some increase by three or four inches upon stimulation; others don't grow in length at all.

Other than undergoing risky surgical procedures, there is no means of penis enlargement. If there were, every man on the planet would be walking around with a very noticeable bulge and a swagger. What you can do, though, is ensure that your blood flow is at its best, thus making your erection as solid as possible.
